Teflon
Commonly known as PTFE with the chemical name Polytetrafluoroethylene.
PTFE is a non-reactive, thermoplastic polymer, non-stick material due to carbon-fluorine bonds. Often used in containers and pipework for reactive and corrosive materials. PTFE is hydrophobic, and has one of the lowest coefficients of friction of any solid material (0.05 to 0.10).
PTFE has a melting temperature of 600K (620°F, 327°C), maintains strength as low as 5K (-450°F, -268°C), and maintains decent flexibility as low as 194K (-110°F, -79°C). At temperatures above 650°C (1200°F) PTFE begins to undergo depolymerization.
When used as seals, gears, bearings, gaskets, bushing (examples), it typically outperforms nylon and acetal types.
